ISN is excited to partner with Environment + Energy Leader to share key components and best practices for companies looking to improve their ESG initiatives. When it comes to the value chain, stakeholder expectations for companies have undergone a tremendous shift in recent years.

It is no longer enough for a company’s activities to create economic value; now, organizations must provide value in terms of ESG factors, as well. ISN shares three elements that proactive companies have in common when it comes to integrating ESG into the value chain.

  • Education: With a multitude of sustainability standards and frameworks available – and untold numbers of potential data points to capture – it can be difficult for organizations to discern where to begin and which path to take when it comes to data collection. Understanding fundamental topics and effectively communicating ESG requirements to contractors and suppliers is necessary to support on-going strategies.
  • Capturing Reliable Data: A sustainable business will account for all three components (environmental, social, and governance) and include material metrics in each area. Capturing environmental data such as the consumption of resources (fossil fuels, water, energy, etc.) can be a good place to start. The list of data points to capture varies based on materiality and shared expectations in the value chain.
  • Measuring Progress: In order to meet ESG goals that have been set, companies should review aggregate data from the vendors that supply their goods and services. It is not just about organizations collecting data but analyzing data to see year-over-year progress from their ESG initiatives.
