As the summer comes to an end, and children are heading back to school, it's important to take extra precautions and prioritize safety. Whether children ride their bike, carpool, take the bus, or walk to school, it's important that both drivers and students keep these tips top of mind.
Drivers
- Take the extra minute to look out for children on the road, in the parking lot, or loading and unloading out of cars in the carpool line
- Obey school zone speed limits
- Never pass a bus that is loading or unloading children
- Do not text and drive
- Stop and yield for any pedestrians crossing at a crosswalk or intersection
- Never go around a school bus that has its lights flashing and stop sign out
- Stop at least 10 feet behind a stopped school bus to allow for students to safely enter and exit
- Always verify there are no occupants left in the vehicle and make sure every child is accounted for
Students
- Eyes up and phones down
- Walk on the sidewalk or path if available
- Look both ways and use a crosswalk - don't assume someone can see you
- Take your earbuds out while walking across the street to stay extra alert
- Make eye contact with any nearby drivers so they know you're aware
- Walk in a group as it provides greater visibility to a driver than a single student
- Wear clothing or backpacks that are reflective to shine light as you walk
