Georgia-Pacific Shares Insights on Applying HOP in the Workplace

Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) Explained

HOP is built on the understanding that humans are inherently imperfect, errors are normal and mistakes are inevitable. The philosophy represents a cultural shift from focusing on the worker’s behavior to focusing on the processes in place designed to protect the worker. It emphasizes the development of systems that are more error tolerant in anticipation of mistakes on a jobsite.

Principles of HOP:

  1. People Make Mistakes
  2. Blame Fixes Nothing
  3. Context Drives Behaviors
  4. Learning is Vital
  5. Response Matters

Georgia-Pacific’s HOP Journey

With this shift in thinking, many organizations are embracing the five principles of HOP to enhance their safety cultures. As an organization striving for best-in-class safety initiatives, Georgia-Pacific LLC, a leader in the building products industry, is at the forefront of implementing emerging procedures and philosophies such as HOP.

Georgia-Pacific has been a partner with ISN® since 2007, managing 138 sites and more than 5,300 contractors within ISNetworld®. The company leverages ISN’s suite of tools, including RAVS Plus®, Contractor Evaluations, Permit to Work and Subcontractor Management to reduce risks, manage compliance onsite, and support its focus on HOP.

Leveraging ISNetworld to track contractor evaluations allows Georgia-Pacific to provide and document feedback during and at the completion of a job, creating a space for open conversation and real-time problem solving with its contractors to minimize on-site incidents. Additionally, the RAVS Plus process helps ensure contractor employees understand and are trained on the company’s written health and safety policies.

Chuck Watts, Safety & Health Manager at Georgia-Pacific, shares the impact HOP has had on its operations:

“Our HOP journey has been an exciting one, made more rewarding every day by the tremendous stories of normal work that takes place all across our system. Even more rewarding is the impact of the solutions emerging from the front lines of our organization, who are being empowered to tell those stories and contribute to the application of our management philosophy and the achievement of our safety vision at GP. I am thrilled the industry is more open to sharing the journeys of companies that are all rowing in the same direction in our quest to reduce the most serious injuries in the workplace.”
